Happy Diwali 2025

What is Diwali?

In the Hindu faith, Diwali celebrates victory of light and good over evil and darkness. Other cultures celebrate Diwali as well. Buddhist, Jains and Sikh celebrate it too. Because of this more than 1 billion people celebrate the holiday and it has a different meaning in each faith and culture.

In the north of India, Diwali celebrates King Rama, or Ramachandra (one of the incarnations of the god Vishnu), and his return to Ayodhya after being in exile for 14 years. In that time, he defeated the demon, Ravana. In the south of India, Diwali celebrates the day Lord Krishna (another incarnation of the god Vishnu) defeated the demon Narakasura.

When Is Diwali?

Diwali is a five-day holiday celebrate on the 15th day of Kartika, a Holy month in the Hindu Calendar. It begins at the start of a new moon. Because of this it's celebrated on a different day every year. This year it begins on Monday October 20th. Usually, it falls in October or November.

How to Celebrate Diwali?

Traditionally, Diwali is celebrated by dressing in colorful traditional clothing, lighting inside and outside the house with lamps, lights, and fireworks. There are also worship services, large traditional feasts, and gifts are exchange too.

Diwali customs include rangoli, the traditional Indian art of using colorful sand, rice or other material to make intricate designs on the floor dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Designs are passed down through families, so each pattern is unique to their family. Because rangoli is dedicated to Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, they are believed to bring wealth & good luck.
